The Town of Hebron was once surrounded by a number of mills that used the many waterways of the area to power their work. Wool, paper, wood, blacksmithing, silk, and other mills have operated in the area. Overall, there were 32 mills in service over the course of the 18th, 19th, and 20th century. As the area entered the Industrial Age, it was a community that would experience the cycles of boom and bust as industries thrived and failed. Many of these old mills were lost to fires, while others were abandoned and dilapidated. Thanks to the Hebron Historical Society, now all of the past mill locations have been located for future generations to appreciate.
Gay City Park is a remnant of those industrial times in Hebron. Named for the 25 families that lived in “Factory Hollow,” whose surnames were predominantly Gay, this Hebron park is full of history and activity. It’s now a 1500-acre wood land setting with abundant clean waterways available to the public. It has several hiking, biking, and horse trails to enjoy. There are beaches near the water, and open fields for playing a variety of sports. The history and environment is why Hebron is one of the best places to live in Connecticut.
